Bring The Beauty Back

If your home is older, chances are your hardwood floors are dark and possibly damaged in spots. But with a little effort, some tools and supplies, we can make your floors shine again.

The first thing we need to do is sand the old hardwood floors in your house. This is a messy job, so be sure to have as many objects, including furniture and home electronics, as possible out of the room. If you have window coverings, take them down. We begin to sand hardwood floors using two different floor sanding machine. The first machine is a larger sander with a handle. This machine will get the bulk of the sanding done. For corners and edges close to the wall, we use a smaller machine that is operated by hand, like a palm sander.

Your technicians will start with the heavier grit paper to remove old wax and varnish. We use a big sander first and move up and down your floor along the wood grain in rows. Then we do the same thing with the smaller sander along the edges of the wall where the larger machine can’t reach. Once the majority of gunk has been sanded away, we use a medium grit sandpaper or disc to help remove scratches and other blemishes that will now become more apparent as the floor is sanded. We vacuum in between sanding to reduce the mess. Then we use a fine grit to finish the sanding job.

The next step in refinishing your hardwood floors is tricky and, if not done correctly, will result in a less than satisfactory finish. It is very important that the floor be cleaned very well before a new coat of varnish is applied. Our experts will vacuum the floor carefully including the baseboards and walls where sawdust often clings. Next, we will use a cleaning solution that is safe for wood to make sure all the dust and debris left from sanding is gone.

This is also a good time to check that the nails used to attached the floor are not loose. Your technicians may have to use a hammer and nail set tool to re-set loose nails. If there is a small hole from setting the nail, we use wood filler sparingly and then sand the spot when it has dried.

The final refinishing step is applying a new coat, or several coats, of varnish. We plan this work so that when we are near the end, we can exit the room without disturbing the surface. Your technicians will start at one end and work in rows, just like painting a wall, until we have covered the entire floor. It will take several coats to get the result you want.

Now you will have gleaming hardwood floors that will greet would-be buyers to your home!
